Keynote Speaker Bios:
Susan Koch - "Keys to Building Entrepreneurial Team Resilience"
Susan is a finance veteran in pre-commercial clean technology companies. She is a Canadian and US CPA of 40 years’ experience, with 25 of those years in early-stage clean tech development and commercialization. Susan’s skill set includes a broad-based understanding of finance, venture deal structures, taxation & accounting and diverse economic & business environments. Practical experience includes working as a member of senior management with the board in venture financed start-ups, M&A and in turnarounds, to solve a wide variety of difficult business challenges faced by early-stage companies, including fundraising, team building and corporate processes. Susan held positions of CFO and then COO & VP, Accounting at Squamish based Carbon Engineering (direct air capture) sold to Occidental Petroleum November 2023, CFO at Vancouver-based General Fusion (nuclear fusion), CFO at Quebec City-based Vaperma (membrane technology for ethanol dehydration), and VP Finance and CFO at Vancouver-based Cellex Power Products, (fuel cells for materials handling equipment) sold to Plug Power May 2007. From Cellex through to Carbon Engineering, Susan was a core team member on financings totaling $330M, raising funds from North American, European and international investors, in addition to $150M in Canadian and US government grants and loans, and Canadian Scientific Research & Experimental Development (SRED). Since “retiring” from Carbon Engineering, Susan has joined Rethink Climate, a venture studio for high impact climate opportunities, as CFO, and joined the board of directors of the BC Center for Innovation and Clean Energy.
Mike Volker - "Lessons Learned from 25 Years of VANTEC - Building the EcoSystem"
Mike Volker is an angel investor and entrepreneur. He is chairman of WUTIF Capital Inc - the Western Universities Technology Innovation Fund - an "angel" fund for start-ups. Mike founded the Vancouver Angel Network, VANTEC, and is co-president of the Keiretsu Forum's Vancouver Chapter. He's also a director and past-Chairman of New Ventures BC. In 2009, Mike was named Canadian Angel Investor of the Year by the National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) and B.C. Angel of the Year by the B.C. Angel Forum.
